How a photo becomes a coloring page

Four steps, no design software, no drawing skill. Most orders take about ten minutes to place.

Step 1

Upload your photos

Pick 24 photos from your phone or computer — the kids, the dog, the trip to the lake, last Christmas morning. Straight from an iPhone is fine; we handle HEIC files.

Step 2

Choose a cover

Five cover styles, three of which put the child's name right on the front. Add the name at checkout and it's printed exactly as you type it.

Step 3

We draw the pages

Each photo becomes a clean, bold-outline coloring page — the kind a four-year-old can actually stay inside. Every page is reviewed by a person before it goes to print.

Step 4

It ships to your door

Printed 8.5×11 on heavyweight paper, softcover, bound in the USA and shipped to you — typically within 7 to 10 business days of approval.

A coloring book they'll keep long after it's colored in

Most children's coloring books are disposable by design — a licensed character, forty pages, gone in a week. A book drawn from a child's own life is a different object entirely. The kid on page seven is them. The dog on page twelve is their dog. Grandparents figured this out a long time ago: the gift that gets kept is the one that's about the person receiving it.

That's the whole idea behind Once Upon a Line. You send us the photos you already have on your phone; we turn them into custom line art and print them as a real, bound book. No app to download, no subscription, no screen. Just a book, a box of crayons, and a kid at the kitchen table.

Who it's for

Grandparents shopping for grandkids who live three states away. Parents looking for a birthday gift that isn't more plastic. Aunts and uncles who want the good-gift reputation. It works well for ages roughly 3 to 10 — the line weight is heavy enough for small hands and the scenes are simple enough not to frustrate them.

It also travels well as a memory book: a year of family photos, a first pet, a summer at the lake, a new baby's first months. Several customers have ordered two copies — one to color, one to keep clean on the shelf.

Or start with a themed book

If you don't have photos ready, or you want something to hand over today, we publish ten themed coloring books at $10 each — Dino Days, Starry Space, Ocean Friends, Little Safari, Rainbow Dreams, Garden Blooms, Fairy Garden, Best Friends, On the Farm and On the Move. Same 24 pages, same 8.5×11 trim, same US printing. They make good party favors and good stocking stuffers, and they're a low-risk way to see the print quality before you commit to a custom book.

Common questions

Still deciding? These are the things people ask before their first order.

How many photos do I need?

Twenty-four — one for each page of the book. They don't have to be professional shots or even especially sharp; ordinary phone photos work best, because those are the ones with the real moments in them. Photos with clear faces and good light turn into the strongest pages.

What does a custom coloring book cost?

A custom softcover book is $25, which covers all 24 personalized pages, your choice of cover, and printing. The ten ready-made themed books are $10 each. Shipping is calculated at checkout.

How long does it take to arrive?

Plan on about 7 to 10 business days from approval to delivery. Drawing and reviewing the pages takes the first part of that window; printing and shipping takes the rest. Order with a week or two of margin if it's for a birthday.

Can I put my child's name on the cover?

Yes. Three of the five cover styles are built around the child's name — you type it in at checkout and it's printed on the front exactly as entered. The other two covers are unnamed designs, which is the better pick if the book is a surprise for more than one child.

What size is the book, and where is it printed?

Every book is 8.5×11 inches, softcover, 24 pages, printed on heavyweight paper in the United States. The large trim size matters more than it sounds like it should — small children need room to color.

What ages is this for?

Roughly 3 to 10. The line art is drawn with bold, well-separated outlines so younger children can fill it in without frustration, while the scenes still have enough detail to hold the attention of a seven- or eight-year-old.

Will you use my family photos for anything else?

No. Your photos are used to produce your book and nothing else. We don't sell them, publish them, or share them with anyone outside the printing process.
